Who we are
Founded in 1969, the UNC Charlotte Urban Institute is our region’s applied research and community outreach center. We seek solutions to the complex social, economic and environmental challenges facing our communities. We engage expertise across a diverse set of disciplines and life experiences to curate data, and we conduct actionable research and policy analysis that helps us make better decisions to benefit us all.
The institute is part of UNC Charlotte’s urbanCORE, which is a unit of Academic Affairs.

Affiliations
The UNC Charlotte Urban Institute is a member of the National Neighborhood Indicators Partnership, a collaboration among local partners and the Urban Institute, a Washington-based national research organization, to further the development and use of neighborhood-level information systems in community-building and policymaking.
The UNC Charlotte Urban Institute is a member of the Consortium of University Public Service Organizations (CUPSO), which supports university-based public service institutes in their efforts to assist state and local governments on a range of contemporary issues and challenges.
CUPSO facilitates networking, information exchange, and collaboration among its member institutions. CUPSO members focus on: improving policy making by providing credible research and evaluation information; improving government management practices through research, training, and technical assistance; developing leadership skills among city, county, state, and regional government and nonprofit leaders; and providing students with opportunities to learn about and actively participate in addressing public policy challenges.
