Podcast: Celebrating good urban design in Charlotte
When it comes to Charlotte’s urban design, there’s a perception that the city is dominated by apartments and bland, corporate towers.
But a new award series is trying to prove that’s not the whole story. The Charlotte Urban Design Awards (or Urbies) relaunched this year, co-hosted by the UNC Charlotte College of Arts + Architecture and the city of Charlotte, with the goal of highlighting good design and inspiring the city to do more.
This week’s podcast guests include two winners:
- Former Charlotte Mayor and longtime architect Harvey Gantt.
- Damon Hemmerdinger, co-president of ATCO Properties, the developer behind the massive Camp North End adaptive reuse project.
In addition, we’re joined by Deb Ryan, a UNC Charlotte professor, designer and one of the forces behind the new awards series.
